Which airport to fly into
It is best to fly into Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and take a shuttle (Supershuttle, PrimeTime Shuttle) to one of the ferry terminals to catch the Catalina Express.

Karmel Shuttles has direct airport transfers to the Catalina Express terminals for the most straightforward reservation.

Getting to Catalina Island

Catalina Island is not accessible by car, so you will want to plan to drive to one of the Catalina Express ferry locations and take the ferry to Avalon (parking costs apply). The ferry takes about an hour to arrive and ferries leave from San Pedro, Long Beach, and Dana Point. Remember to reserve the ferry early, in case it gets overbooked!

The three ports are:

Long Beach: 320 Golden Shore, Long Beach, CA 90802 ($15/day parking)
Dana Point: 34675 Golden Lantern St., Dana Point, CA 92629 ($12/day parking)

San Pedro: Berth 95, San Pedro, CA 90731 (at Swinford and Harbor Boulevard; $16/day parking)

Other options include helicopter and sea plane.

We will be meeting in the Overlook Hall in Avalon, on the beautiful Catalina Island. The Overlook Hall sits on a hill overlooking Avalon, and was completely renovated in 2010. It has internet. There is an upstairs where the conference will be located, and downstairs where we will host the posters. The Overlook Hall is within easy walking distance of almost all hotels in Avalon, sitting nearly in the center of the city. Make sure you book a hotel in Avalon!

Catalina Island is an island located just slightly southwest of the Los Angeles area. It takes about an hour to arrive on the Island via multiple ferry options. Avalon is the main city within Catalina, and is about a square mile. Catalina is an outdoors person’s paradise, with great hiking, scuba diving, and water-related sports. Avalon has ample restaurants, and accommodations for conference goers, and is an excellent place to take an extra day or two over the weekend to explore and enjoy the island feel an hour away from Los Angeles.
